A Heart Condition | Sep 18th

 “The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he can turn it wherever he will.”

  Proverbs 21:1

  Beloved, whose hand is your heart in? It is a comfort in knowing that God is working providentially within His creation. We often find comfort in this verse when we face trials beyond our control, especially when it involves those opposed to us. But let us reflect on our hearts: who or what is turning our attitudes like a stream?

  As a child growing up in the country, I would spend many hours playing in the woods, including a brook that ran behind our home. We would fish, swim, and build dams there. Sometimes we would pile stones into dams or form jetties to move the water where we wanted it. We did this for fun or to make certain areas of the brook deeper to swim in.

  Our hearts can be moved in different directions by what we allow to influence them. God’s providence is at work, and as His children, we should request that our hearts be like a stream in His hands. May the Holy Spirit steer us away from jealousy, anger, lust, and pride while filling us from the fountain of life, peace, joy, forgiveness, and compassion.

  Does your life reflect the still waters of God, providing refreshment to others, or do your words and actions resemble a torrent of conflict? Allow the Spirit of God to instill His fruitfulness in your heart, for the glory of God, the benefit of others, and your own inner peace. May your heart remain surrendered to God’s guidance.
