 “They began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread.”

   Mark 8:16

  Beloved, our greatest need is not always the things we can see or touch with our hands; it is the soul of a person in the greatest need of Christ.

  Jesus warned the disciples about the yeast of the Pharisees, yet they did not understand His warning and considered only physical concerns. In the American church, there is often a strong emphasis on God meeting physical needs, as well as on emotional well-being, self-improvement, marriage, and family. While these aspects have a role in our relationship with God, they are not the primary reason we follow Christ or the central purpose of our faith. Christ alone is the treasure of heaven and our first love.

  Growth in understanding of God and conformity to the Savior is what identifies us as children of God. When the Lord is the pursuit of our hearts, all other concerns assume their proper place. The warnings of scripture address our relationship with God, emphasizing the condition of the soul and the necessity of reconciliation and ongoing fellowship with Him, rather than the fulfillment of material provisions. Physical needs are secondary to spiritual needs.

  Let us ask the Holy Spirit to help us to become aware of our deepest and truest needs so that we may know God and grow in Him.
