Thirsty | Dec. 19th

Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.”

   John 4:13

The well of Jacob had provided for generations; Jacob himself drank from it, yet it lacked true life. Jesus was speaking to the woman of Samaria about spiritual truths while standing by the well of Jacob.

The allegory of the well is clear: just as we must return daily to Jacob's well for physical water, we often seek fulfillment in earthly things that can never satisfy our deeper, spiritual thirst. Jesus uses the well to illustrate that while physical water temporarily quenches thirst, only He can meet the enduring needs of the soul.

Jesus was speaking to the woman’s true thirst. Her soul languished because she lacked spiritual life. Only Jesus can quench the soul. Only He can bring us from the death of sin into newness of eternal life. Let us not keep reaching for things that will never bring life. Once we come to Christ, let us continue to come unto Him daily for life. Only the Lord can quench our souls' thirst.

In Christ Alone.
