When Darkness Comes | Sep 21st

 “ I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.”

  Psalm 9:1

Beloved, there are mornings when the sun has scarcely risen, and our hearts have already taken the path of sorrow. The burdens of yesterday may linger into the new day, or the anticipation of what lies ahead may weigh heavily upon us. At times, there is no apparent reason for our feelings. Such experiences reflect the reality of our mortal existence in a fallen world.

Regardless of the cause of the darkness that envelops us, there remains hope for the soul weary from strain. Like the Psalmist, we are called to direct our attention and thoughts toward God, recalling His goodness. Record, speak aloud, or reflect upon each blessing God has bestowed. Proclaim the wonders of His name and consider how His attributes have been revealed to you through Scripture and in the situations of your life.

  Turn your attention to the last five chapters in the book of Psalms; see how the Psalmist extols the Lord. Give praise to God, turning your heart away from the path of despair and into the green pastures of the Shepherd. There He will cause you to lie down and will restore your soul for His name's sake. Start the day and in the setting of the sun, counting your many blessings; name them one by one, and you will find peace and hope in God.
