Peaceful and Content

“Godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into this world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.”

   1 Timothy 6:6-7

Beloved, are you at peace? True contentment comes from setting our hearts on Christ. The apostle reminds us we arrive in this world with nothing and leave just as empty-handed, urging us to focus on the lasting satisfaction found in Christ.

If we are trusting that the Lord supplies our needs and that He is providentially working in our lives, then we can learn to be content. When we recognize the temporal nature of the things of this life, we begin to value the eternal things and find peace in our hearts.

Everyone can appreciate beautiful things, but not all of these things are necessary. I have often heard that life is short, so why drive a boring car? However, at the same time, they depreciate immediately and often break down. Enjoy one, but do not find your identity in a car. It is the understanding that we cannot depart this world with anything that helps us to lose hold of this world. We do not have to abstain just for the sake of sacrifice, but let us not be consumed in such a way that peace, contentment, and joy in the Lord are absent because we feel we do not have what we want or what we think would make us truly happy.

Let us set our hearts upon the Lord and be content with Him and all that comes from His good hand.

In Christ Alone.
