"Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor the drunkards, nor the revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God." -1 Corinthians 6:9-11
Beloved, it would be good for us to prayerfully study these verses as we consider the severity of God and His mercy. There are many sins mentioned here. Any one of them causes someone to be separated from God and prohibits such a life from entering the kingdom of God. This cannot be denied by the context of these verses. Given such biblical truth, we must consider how our nation has set aside this month in celebrating the pride of sexual perversion and how the church should respond. Let us be aware that scripture has been consistent from Genesis to Revelation in calling homosexuality sin and an abomination before God. Scripture also indicates that this sin is particularly grievous before the Lord. Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed by God because of this sin and other sexual perversions that were perpetrated there. Yet as we travel through our cities and towns, we see flags celebrating this sinful lifestyle while apostate churches display the same flags that advocate this sexual perversion. "Love is not love" according to the Bible, no matter what culture, political platform, or apostate church says.
What does this verse tell us specifically? That sexual immorality, adultery, and homosexuality are sins. You cannot call yourself a Christian, be part of the body of Christ, or enter the kingdom of God if you live in and practice these sins. Before God, such practices are sinful then and now. These are not new sins, but unfortunately, humanity has participated in such abomination since the fall.
Notice what Paul says to these believers in Corinth, "And such were some of you." There were those among this local church who lived in these sins, but they had repented. Beloved, the church of today must continue to be faithful to the word of God in calling out sin but believing that the Lord still saves the lost sinner. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Paul continues, "But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God." Some used to live in these sins, but they had repented, found salvation, forgiveness, and transformed life in Jesus Christ
Beloved, what God did among those sinners saved by grace in that day He can still do today. There is not a life that God cannot wash, sanctify, and justify in Christ. However, it would be unloving and a violation of God's commandments if we did not warn others. May we remain faithful to God and His word while believing in His ability to save the lost.
In Christ Alone,
Pastor Wight
