“When he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, ‘This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

  1 Corinthians 11:24

On the night of His betrayal, Jesus lifted up a piece of bread in His hands and blessed it. The Son thanked the Heavenly Father for this bread and then broke it, declaring to His friends, "This is my body, which is for you."

They did not fully understand what the Lord was doing or to what degree His body would be broken for His people. How the Lord would make atonement for all those who would partake of His sacrifice. The people of God, to this day, come to the Lord’s table to hold a physical piece of bread in order to remember what Christ has done for them.

We hold this physical emblem in order that we might learn that there is a spiritual work accomplished for us in the death, resurrection, and ascension of Christ that is just as real as the bread we partake of. Beloved, remember that Christ was broken for you and that you live in Him as well.

“Light dawns in the darkness for the upright; he is gracious, merciful, and righteous.”

   Psalm 112:4

Beloved, in the deadness of the night, it is hard to expect the dawning of a new day. Be assured, the darkness cannot veil you from God; He sees you, and His face shall shine upon you.

The grace, mercy, and righteousness of the Lord give us peace while we wait for daybreak. We know that the Lord has promised to guide us through the valley of the shadow of death and to keep us. Because the mercy of God is made new every morning, we know the darkness has to give way to the light of grace.

Let your heart take comfort in God and His ways. He will not let you be put to shame for trusting Him even in the darkest of times.

“You, O Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.”

   Psalm 3:3

Beloved, we wrestle not against flesh and blood. Our adversary and struggle are spiritual. We are at war with our flesh and from the onslaught of the evil one.

When the enemy comes in like a flood upon your heart and mind, hide yourself in Christ. Be reminded that the Holy Spirit in you is greater than the enemy. If the Lord is our shield, then the fiery darts of the enemy will not ignite upon our spirit and destroy us.

We may experience the agony of toil and the frustration of momentary weakness, but in repentance and humility, we shall know victory in Christ. It is in the knowledge of God’s sustaining grace, the active work of the Holy Spirit, and the keeping power of Christ’s redemption, we are secure. The mighty shield, which is our God, cannot be broken. Though you are buffeted, you are safe in Christ.
