People are Watching | June 26th

  “He entered the synagogue, and a man was there with a withered hand. And they watched Jesus, to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath.”

   Mark 3:1-2

  Beloved, Jesus was continually observed by those around Him. Some watched with wonder and curiosity, while others harbored malice and prejudice. Still others looked on with childlike faith. We can only imagine the emotions present in these moments. Was the atmosphere tense, awkward, hopeful, or peaceful? Were the expressions on their faces cold and critical, or welcoming and warm? Despite these varied responses, Jesus Himself remained unchanged. The opinions of others did not influence our Lord. He was the light of the world, and He remained constant.

  We often encounter similar situations within our families, workplaces, or social circles. Those who know we are Christians observe how we respond to various aspects of life. They notice how we treat others, the topics we discuss, and the demeanor we display. While some of this scrutiny may be unwarranted, we nonetheless serve as representatives of Christ in the lives of those around us.

  Let us remain aware of this reality today, yet not become anxious about it. The Holy Spirit dwelling within you expresses Christ to the world. He empowers us to live by His strength rather than our own. Although we will never achieve perfection and will make mistakes, by God’s grace we can demonstrate love, gentleness, patience, and forgiveness. Let us strive to be the light of Christ in a world that often feels dark. You are being observed; may others see Jesus in you.
